Well, that?s the cool thing ? with Hideo Kojima at the helm, anything can happen.Pellis, Neal R. Truly, there has never been a more exciting time to be a Metal Gear fan, as the final chapter of the Big Boss saga will be written. The ultimate amalgamation of everything Hideo Kojima has learned over the last 30 years will present itself in the form of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Regenerating health, slow-motion reflex modes and streamlined mechanics have raised the ire of Metal Gear fans ? but have proved to be very smart decisions on Kojima?s part. Not just in regards to the ambitious open-world, but in the way Snake himself moves and interacts with his world. This is quite clearly seen in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, where Western game design has seeped into the traditional stealth gameplay. Basically, Metal Gear?s longevity is reliant on Kojima?s willingness to adapt to global audiences and modern trends. As Final Fantasy embarrasses itself with bizarre J-Pop and the Japanese-designed black man Sazh Katzroy, Metal Gear Solid has instead gone to great pains in creating a compelling plot that encompasses real global themes, like nuclear war, political corruption and international conflict. As such, focusing too much on one culture risks alienating all others. So within that we have to think of how to impact the whole international market how to make a game geared towards that market?.Īs characters have become more photorealistic, the ?Japanese? aspects have stood out more and more whether it was through dialogue, mannerisms or other idiosyncrasies. ![]() Nowadays there?s a lot of talking and a lot of expression. Back in the day, games didn?t have spoken dialogue. That?s a huge problem we face in the Japanese market. Oftentimes they can?t think of an ending. He explained that Snake?s adventures must have a wider-world appeal ? especially considering the advanced tech found in today?s videogames ?Writers in Japan usually write four or five novels in parallel and release sequentially by chapter in magazines and whatnot. ?I try not to think like I?m a Japanese game developer,? Kojima stated, ?Because in Japan Metal Gear only has so much success, in terms of people not liking that much Metal Gear here?. ![]() Though Western franchises have waned, it could be seen that it is the weakening Japanese institutions that are far more apparent ? especially considering how much older they are. Speaking in regards to the perceived declination of Japanese influence in videogames, Kojima believes that the dichotomy between East and West is what is leading to an increasing discord between nations. Unfortunately, in our case, it?s a bit more like The Terminator, where once Cameron steps out of it there was kind of a mess.?Perhaps it is this reluctance to hand the reigns over willy-nilly that has kept Metal Gear Solid at the forefront of the gaming consciousness. ?Ideally I would like to step out from the Metal Gear franchise as a producer and dedicate myself to other games,? he said in a recent interview with Game Informer. ![]() He has cited the Alien films as an example of the perils of switching directors though he is very much aware that he cannot stay with Snake forever. Yet, Kojima has ensured that Metal Gear remains steadfast in the face of such a fast-paced industry, despite repeated claims of his desire to walk away from the series. Classic brands such as Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mortal Kombat, Mega Man and Konami?s own Castlevania have all gone through bouts of identity crises, and even more recent series such as Halo, inFamous, Uncharted, Assassin?s Creed, Call of Duty and God of War have shown signs of fatigue. How? How does such a long-running series maintain its lustre, especially when so many others have sunk into obscurity as they face seemingly endless identity crises? Aside from the ever-anomalous Nintendo, it seems that every major gaming IP has dipped in importance and bearing with reboots and misguided redesigns a common occurrence in today?s industry. As the series has continued with Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes and the Phantom Pain, there has been absolutely no sign of decline ? both in quality, and in relevance. ![]()
